Sadie
Sadie began experiencing seizures around the age of 12 months. Concerned, her parents immediately consulted a paediatrician, who referred them to a neurologist. An EEG confirmed Sadie's diagnosis of epilepsy by the time she was 14 months old, and she was started on medication. Despite trying approximately eight different medications over the years, none have been effective in controlling her seizures.
Sadie’s seizures, which number around 50 per day, have a huge impact on her ability to learn. This frequent seizure activity disrupts her daily life and requires constant supervision to prevent falls and instability caused by the seizures.
One of the types of seizures Sadie experiences is absence seizures, a form of epilepsy characterised by brief lapses in awareness. During these episodes, which last only a few seconds, the person may seem to "zone out" or have a blank stare, often going unnoticed by others.
Despite the severity of her condition, Sadie remains happy and positive, and she is a very determined and confident little human. Understandably, her parents are deeply affected by her diagnosis and continue to seek better solutions for managing her condition.
Currently, Sadie is medication-free, with her family focusing on dietary changes to manage her seizures. This approach has proven to be more effective in reducing her seizure episodes compared to previous medications. Sadie enjoys spending time with her pets—her dog and cat—going for car rides, playing with bubbles, watching Blippi, and attending kindergarten.
Her vibrant personality and zest for life continue to inspire her family as they navigate the challenges of her condition and strive for a better future for her.
